Today in computer class, we learned how to use Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. The class is very interesting. As soon as it was done, we couldn’t help but come back to the dorms and discuss our lessons that we learned with others. Excel is teaching us how computing actually works, as far as typing our business and mission statement. We are also learning how to type better, which is definitely something that all of us need to improve.

Today we prayed-out our brothers who are going home, giving them words of encouragement. We advised all of them not to make the same mistakes and reminded them that their families need them. We also told them to keep in mind the struggles that they went through in prison. This lifestyle is one that no one wants, and we will never get back the time that we lost with our families. To know that we have a brotherhood/second family in PEP is reassuring. They always find a way to help us through our trials. And in return, they are not alone. We’ve got their back 100%.

Today we discussed the closing of 63 Sam’s Club locations and the reason why that happened. We discussed their new marketing strategy and the strategic changes in targeting their customers. We also discussed the basics on how to develop a marketing plan. We went over promotional pricing and how to identify your target customers, as well as mixed, pure and free promotions.

We had several guest speakers today, each of them coming to speak about one of our 10 Driving Values. What made it even more powerful was that each speaker was a part of the PEP staff. We learned a great deal about proper fun and the true definition of love.

Today we had our Living in the Village class where we’re learning about financial planning. This class offers valuable information, and our peer educators did an outstanding job helping us understand the curriculum. After class, we did pray-outs for some of our brothers who will be leaving here soon. It’s always exciting to see someone going home. We also enjoyed a little PEP TV while we waited on count to clear.

“I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.”
~Unknown
There are so many occasions when things are explained to us, but we only retain some of what was said. When we recognize something that strikes us, we only remember bits and pieces of information. Learning may occur consciously or without conscious awareness. Learning doesn’t happen all at once, but it builds upon and is shaped by previous knowledge. It is a process that produces changes in an individual, and the changes produced are relatively permanent. Learners have more incentive to learn when they have control over not only how they learn, but also what they learn. The best level of understanding comes from what we do; it is the repetition of daily tasks that coincide with our long-term memory. Better comprehension comes from doing; that much I understand.
